Board Members


Randy Buist is a lover of the ways of Jesus, chasing after justice and mercy and hoping that we as humanity increasingly care for our neighbors regardless of where they live.  Randy is passionate about life, his family, this Kenya Matters project, and exploring this amazing world.  He has been involved with Kenya Matters since January of 2009, currently serving as President of the board.  He took his 13th trip to Karai in November of 2015, bringing his family, parents, and a couple of friends along for this adventure.  Besides time spent with Kenya Matters, he is seasonally involved with his family’s business, Micandy Gardens, which his parents started after getting married as high school sweethearts.  He lives in Jenison, Michigan with his wife, Kathy, and his three children.

Mathias Metzger holds the position of controller at Micandy Gardens, which is where Randy Buist first introduced him to Kenya Matters. In the summer of 2011, Mathias decided to join the board and serve as Treasurer. Although he has not yet traveled to Karai, Kenya, he has gotten involved in the ongoing projects surrounding Kenya Matters. Mathias is a graduate of Calvin College and currently resides in Hudsonville, with his wife Bethany and their two children.

Heidi Swierenga has been on the board since 2011. She currently serves as our board chairperson. She visited Kenya in November of 2014, taking her daughter along for the adventure as well. Her passion for indigent populations and mental health are incorporated in her daily work as a Public Guardian and Conservator for adults in West Michigan, since 2006. She graduated from Calvin College with a Bachelors of Social Work in 1994 and is a member of the Michigan Guardianship Association. She was certified in 2011 as a Nationally Certified Guardian. She lives in Zeeland and enjoys gardening,traveling, and spending time outdoors with her husband and daughter.

Eileen VerStrate joined the Kenya Matters Board in 2012 following her visit to Karai, Kenya. The children and staff had a powerful impact and remain part of her heart. Eileen is married and has four children. She is currently employed at CLC Network and assists her husband, Tim, with his business, Tim VerStrate Custom Homes.

Kurt Wilson has been a long standing  board member. Previous to a recent move to Denver, he served as board chair. He holds a Ph.D. from Western Michigan University in the Evaluation of Nonprofit and International Development programs. His current work in evaluation consulting combines the two major emphases of his previous career: Six years in professional philanthropy, overseeing substantial grant-making programs based in both Denver and Colorado Springs, and twelve years leading Compass Arts and Compass Outreach Media, which empower nonprofit organizations with effective media communication.

Alyssa Wozniak is the most recent addition to our board. Alyssa first traveled to Kenya in the summer of 2012 and found a deep affinity for the children and staff. She returned in the fall of 2013 and constantly hopes to return for another visit. . She is currently employed at Ada Bible Church where she is involved in multiple capacities. Alyssa graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Photography, and she is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work.
